Providing Performance Guarantees in an FDDI Network

چکیده
A network subsystem supporting a continuous media file system must guarantee a minimum throughput, a maximum delay, and a muximum jitter. We present a transport protocol that provides these guarantees. To support different types of service, our protocol is built from modules selected to meet the requirements of each communication session. A buffering technique is used to provide jitter guarantees. To provide throughput and delay guarantees, network performance is optimized based on the required transfer rate. The effects of controlling transmission rate and packet size are presented. The resulting transport protocol is modeled on a simulated FDDI network and the results are analyzed. We show that the protocol provides the required guarantees for the anticipated types of traffic.

Approximating the FDDI synchronous mode
We present protocol extensions supporting real-time traffic performance guarantees for Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) implementations lacking a synchronous mode of operation. We provide a brief description of the FDDI protocol, with an emphasis on the synchronous mode and network parameter tuning to meet real-time application demands, and then discuss hardware limitations of some first...
متن کاملPerformance Comparison of ATM LAN with FDDI and Fast Ethernet
Simulation model of a reference network is developed to compare the performance of three high speed Local Area Networks | Fast Ethernet, FDDI and ATM. TCP/IP based application throughput is considered as the performance criteria in comparing the three LANs. Our comparison is based on a hot-spot traac model; many stations send bursty data traac to a single destination. We nd that for such traac ...

We propose and analyze an FDDI-Based Reconfigumble Network (FBRN), with the aim of providing fault-tolerant real-time communication services in mission-critical systems. An FBRN consists of multiple FDDI tmnk rings and has the ability to reconfigure itself in the face of extensive damage. We discuss diflerent fault management mechanisms built into the network and analyze their impact on availab...
متن کاملDeferring Real-time Traac for Improved Non-real-time Communication in Fddi Networks
The Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) is suitable for real-time communication because of the high speed and the performance guarantees it provides. However, these guarantees are achieved at the expense of non-real-time traac because the real-time messages are given higher priority over non-real-time messages, resulting in excessive delays for non-real-time messages. In this paper, we prop...
